Take precautions when burning off

Be vigilant: Landholders should check the CFA website for information regarding burn-offs.

Tatura police are urging landholders to take precautionary measures when starting planned burns.

The reminder comes after a landholder in Craven Rd, Tatura, was left red-faced when the fire from his planned burn reignited.

The landholder started a planned burn on a property at 7pm on May 2.

He was present during the burn until 2.30am the following morning when he left the site, believing the fire was extinguished.

But due to winds increasing the following day, the fire re-ignited, burning 500m along the Craven Rd fence line and another 500m along adjoining Murton Rd.

Tatura police Sergeant Darryl Phillips urged landholders to check the CFA website for information regarding burn-offs in the area.

‘‘When conducting planned burns, precautions should be taken to prevent unexpected flare-ups from occurring,’’ he said.

■Planned burns can be registered by phoning 1800 668 511 and providing the required information.
