New Teachers to the Goulburn Valley gathered at the Aussie Friday night for a social affair.

New teachers to the Goulburn Valley met for the first of many gatherings on Friday night at the Aussie Hotel in Shepparton.

The group is hoping to support teachers through a social network and professional development.

Network chairman Paul Tozer said the group planned to host events to help new teachers become comfortable in the region.

‘‘When good staff come to the GV we want them to stay in the GV,’’ Mr Tozer said.

He said the night was social this time.

‘‘We hope to have one or two social events per term and one professional development session also,’’ he said.

More than 20 new teachers from the Shepparton region, including Tatura and Cobram, attended the get-together.

The teachers also completed a survey to provide the group with a better understanding of what people wanted from future gatherings.

‘‘If teachers are happy personally, then that will reflect in their teaching style and provide better teaching practices,’’ Mr Tozer said.

‘‘The events also offer insight into any curriculum needs.’’
