Competition was tight this week with a now cashed-up Phil Savage taking the honours with a round of 87-21-66. Hopefully his over-inflated handicap will have taken a hit after his recent good form because Phil looks after his handicap like no other.

Next to the dollar he took off Simon Doherty in their weekly challenge, his handicap is his most cherished possession.

However, his dollar was on shaky ground early in the day after Simon got through the first nine with his best ever one over par 37 off-the-stick, including three birdies.

Unfortunately, after his spectacular start, Simon’s game unravelled somewhat on the back nine and he finished one shot behind Phil.

As well as the Bruce Brown voucher, Phil earned the final spot in the Tiger Cup play-off which will be played on March 24.

Ball competition winners were Bill Bray and Simon Doherty, with both finishing on 80-13-67.

Nearest-the-pins were won by Jeff Newham on the sixth, Bill Bray on the ninth and the accurate John Fuller on the jackpot 12th.

Least putts was won by Bruce Brown with 25 on a count back from co-sponsor Simon Doherty, who once again looked to have the putts covered at the halfway mark, having had just 11 on the front nine.

Next Saturday is the Bernie Doyle Memorial stableford.

There are a couple of changes to note for the syllabus in upcoming weeks. The par event on Saturday, March 10, has been banished and replaced by a captain’s pick called ‘string golf’.

The captain will offer a detailed explanation as to how this novelty tactical event is played before we take to the course, so don’t worry if you are not up to speed on it yet.

Saturday, March 17 is opening day, 4BBB stableford, a 12.30pm shotgun start.

The next Privilege Cup round, which incorporates the annual Tiger Cup play-off, will be on March 24, replacing the stableford event listed in the syllabus.

Surprisingly for a small club there are 12 separate qualifiers. They are Simon Doherty, Ash Sanders, Darryl Johnston, Joe Chant, Bruce Brown, Cory Berghofer, Tony Borrelli, Greg Hall, Bill Bray, Barry Webber, John Fuller and Phil Savage.
