Slow down around roadworks

Police are concerned about drivers ignoring reduced speed zones near roadworks.

A Greater Shepparton Highway Patrol sting has unveiled complete driver disregard of roadwork speed limits.

Within one hour, Shepparton Highway Patrol members stationed at Midland Hwy roadworks in Ardmona last week caught five speeding drivers, among other offences.

Shepparton Highway Patrol Sergeant Janne Kennedy said the sting aimed to determine just how extensive the problem was, after construction companies complained.

The road speed limit is usually 100km/h, but during works to improve safety, the limit is 40km/h.

The highway at Ardmona has been identified as one of the state’s top 20 high-risk roads, following a number of fatal and serious crashes.

Sgt Kennedy was disappointed with the behaviour of drivers and that police had pulled over a driver about every three minutes for speeding.

‘‘We went out there in a fully marked car with our lights on. There was plenty of signage. We stood out there with a laser and we still, for an hour, found a number of speeding matters,’’ Sgt Kennedy said.

‘‘It is a high-speed road normally and it may be that people are fatigued, distracted or don’t care, but it’s about the safety of the workers.

‘‘These people have to be close to the road. They have to cross the road sometimes and it can be very hard for them.’’

Sgt Kennedy said police would be targeting the area, but it was up to the community to improve road safety and heed the road signs.

‘‘It’s obviously a high volume road, but it applies to any roadworks anywhere — if there’s no sign permitting a high speed, drivers are not allowed to go faster,’’ she said.

‘‘We’re going to be hitting that road a lot. We’ve had fatals there and it’s listed as a high-risk road, so we want to remind drivers that they need to be doing the right thing on the highways.’’

VicRoads said roadworks on the Midland Hwy at Ardmona were expected to be completed this month.
