Tatura’s Australia Day celebrations will be held at the Italian Social Club rooms in Main St, Tatura, this year.
Organising committee member Rod Schubert said festivities would begin with an Aussie sausage sizzle breakfast, starting at 8.30am, then the formal aspects of the celebration of Australia Day would begin at 9.30am, finishing about 11am when a morning tea would be available for everyone.
Awards for the Tatura and District Citizen of the Year and the Junior Citizen of the Year will be presented, together with a number of other community awards.
‘‘We are honoured to have Wendy Lovell, Member for Northern Victoria, and Cr Seema Abdullah, Deputy Mayor, Greater Shepparton City Council, accepting our invitation to attend and to participate in presenting the awards,’’ Mr Schubert said.
He said lawyer Simon Pogue would provide the keynote address this year.
‘‘Simon is a long-term local and is heavily involved with the Tatura community through sporting and service groups,’’ Mr Schubert said.
He said Mr Pogue was originally from Toolamba and spent the formative years of his education at local schools.
‘‘He then spent the best part of three years travelling overseas working in a variety of occupations,’’ Mr Schubert said.
‘‘Simon then decided that given his skill set he’d do well to put his skills to good use and do a law degree.
‘‘Many years later he managed to call himself a lawyer and made the move back home to Toolamba with wife and children to work at a local law firm.
‘‘Simon is content to again call Toolamba home. He doesn’t plan on leaving our wonderful area.
‘‘We are very fortunate this year to have a number of Tatura and District residents who will receive Australian Day awards.
‘‘Australia Day is a time for everyone to join together to appreciate and celebrate our heritage and history and to honour those people who have contributed selflessly to the local community.
‘‘Come along, enjoy yourself and make it a great day.’’
