Second just as sweet

Tatura Hot Bread owners Geoff and Glenda Alexander being presented with their second-place trophy at the Mildura City Great Australian Vanilla Slice Triumph.

Tatura residents don’t have to travel far to get the chance to taste one of the best vanilla slices in the country.

Tatura Hot Bread’s famed slice has once again picked up another accolade, taking out second place at the Mildura City Great Australian Vanilla Slice Triumph recently.

The runners-up position comes after the bakery also took out second place with its vanilla slice in the Victorian Baking Show earlier this year.

Owner Glenda Alexander said they were incredibly happy with the product they presented on the day — Saturday, August 19.

‘‘It travelled really well for spending five hours in an Esky,’’ she said.

Ms Alexander said they just entered the professional category this year, which their bakers had got down to a fine art.

‘‘We decided to focus on vanillas,’’ she said.

‘‘We’ve got the recipe pretty well down-pat.’’

The bakery was required to enter 10 pieces of the product.

Bakeries from across the country converged on the Victorian town for the event, which also featured live entertainment, kids activities, cooking demonstrations and a market hall with slices to buy and try.

Tatura Hot Bread was joined by fellow Goulburn Valley bakery North End Bakehouse, Shepparton, which took out third place in the professional category and Mawson’s Bakery Cafe, Euroa, which won first, second and third place in the innovative slice category.
