Tatura business Coffee+ has recently begun to sell takeaway coffee cups that are 100 per cent decomposable.
Business owner Michelle Keen said the idea came from watching the ABC documentary War on Waste.
‘‘I’ve received a really good response from my customers, they’re really happy about it,’’ Mrs Keen said.
‘‘One of my customers came up with a great idea to put a plant in the cup (after you’ve used it).
‘‘Once the plant is in the cup you could put it in your garden to decompose.’’
The ABC’s War On Waste documentary sheds light on the impact of Australia’s convenience culture and focused on Australia’s coffee industry.
It mentions that one billion disposable cups are sent to landfills across Australia each year and also debunks the misconception that disposable cups are recyclable.
Coffee+’s new cups are completely environmentally friendly and will break down within 12 weeks.
‘‘Saving the planet one cup at a time,’’ Mrs Keen said.
