Golf for a great cause

The event raises funds for The Community Fund Goulburn Valley which is distributed into the community.

Members of the Tatura Golf Club Alex Howson, Bill Ashcroft, Jeff Huddle and Dave Roberts, the organising committee for the upcoming Water Industry Golf and Bowls Day.

After almost 30 years, Hill Top Golf and Country Club will host another Water Industry Golf and Bowls Day, raising funds for The Community Fund Goulburn Valley.

Dave Roberts, John Mapson, Jeff Huddle and Chris Tomlison make up the volunteer organising committee which, along with The Community Fund’s Andrea McNab, put together an entertaining day for competitors from across the region.

The Community Fund chief executive Cheryl Hammer said the organisation became involved in 2013 as the recipient of funds raised from the day, which were distributed back into the community.

‘‘More than 120 golfers and bowlers enter each year,’’ Ms Hammer said.

‘‘The 18-hole course is a fabulous venue for the golfers and there is plenty of friendly competition on the bowling green as well.’’

The annual fundraiser, which has raised more than $200000 for charity in its almost three decades of existence, has enjoyed great support from its sponsors and partners, which this year include Goulburn Valley Water, GAME Traffic and Contracting, Rubicon, DG Consulting, The Apprenticeship Factory, Goulburn-Murray Water and Mawsons Concrete and Quarries.

‘‘This event raises funds to support annual major and minor grants distributed by The Community Fund helping the disabled, the elderly, early education for children, struggling families and disengaged youth,’’ Ms Hammer said.

She said events like this one, organised and supported by the community, were the most appreciated by the organisation.

‘‘We appreciate this committee coming together every year to run the golf day and are grateful more than 100 people show up every year to support it, raising much-needed funds every year,’’ Ms Hammer said.

‘‘They have obviously hit on a great formula for the day as it has continued for nearly three decades and is enjoyed by all who attend.’’

She said The Community Fund’s major grants for 2017 opened for application on June 1 and all details could be found on the ‘‘Apply for Funds’’ page on the website.

■The Water Industry Golf and Bowls Day will be held this Friday, May 19, and it is not too late to enter a golf or bowls team if you are keen for a round for a good cause. Phone Andrea on 0409323842 or email [email protected]
